St Patrick's Chapel Art Project

For Key Stages 2 & 3

East Side & Holy Thorn Tree - click for enlargementIn 2008 - 2009 the small almshouse chapel, St Patrick's Chapel in the NW courtyard of the Abbey, was repaired and renovated. The exterior was covered with lime mortar to waterproof it, and the interior with lime plaster to help the old stone walls to breathe. This left a perfect surface for painting murals, so a second phase of the project was started to decorate the inside using the skills and crafts appropriate to the 14th century when the chapel was built. New hand made floor tiles and a new stained glass window were commissioned to go with the murals, and the artists concerned agreed to teach the skills of their art form to a new generation of volunteers.

A new Teacher's Pack, St Patrick's Chapel Art Project, has been created so that teachers can access this rich resource to enrich art and design projects based on the medieval remains at the Abbey. It contains information and notes on both the original skills and on the volunteer project that helped to create the new works of art in the Chapel. There are also some lesson plans and other teaching notes from an older art resource at the Abbey, Inspired Art! There is also a set of loan boxes containing original artefacts in stone, tile and stained glass, which can be borrowed for use in school to follow up an art visit to the Abbey. Find the notes in PDF form on the Workbooklets, Trails and Quizzes section of the website, and contact the Education Officer for details of the loan collection.
