Tickets to Glastonbury Abbey will include a voluntary donation for £1 to help the Rescue Our Ruins Appeal from August 1

Prices to the historic Somerset landmark have not been increased for 18 months and the trustees, recognising the difficult economic climate, have decided to keep them at the same level, said Janet Bell, the Abbey’s acting director.

However, she said the Abbey will instead introduce a voluntary contribution in a bid to ensure the ruins are safeguarded for future generations.

Janet said: “We recognise the difficult times we are all living in but need to balance this with ensuring the Abbey is safeguarded for the future. Our pricing structure is good value for money – an annual season ticket for an adult is £24.  We are open 364 days of the year which means a visit daily with a season ticket equals less than seven pence and 46p if someone visits once a week.

“We recently launched the Rescue Our Ruins appeal to raise £500,000 as some of the ancient stones are in urgent need of attention with parts starting to crumble.

“Our prices for all tickets, excluding children, will, from August 1, include an additional pound for the appeal and we are hoping people will fill in a Gift Aid form too so we can claim back a further 25p in every pound. In the case of a family ticket it will be an extra £2 for the two adults.

“Obviously this is voluntary and visitors can opt out of making the donation.

“When we launched the appeal in May we were very clear that if everyone living, working and visiting Somerset gave one pound we would raise the money needed to protect the Abbey for generations to come – after all a pound doesn’t buy very much these days – and the response so far has been encouraging.”

“Staff and trustees are giving too and organising a number of fund-raising events in the months to come to help boost the coffers.”

The additional £1 does not apply to the Adult Party Price.

The appeal will fund conservation work and enhance the visitor experience to the Abbey in the following areas:- The North Wall – the oldest standing part of the Abbey dating to the Norman period, the Lady Chapel, Crypt and Galilee - one of the finest Romanesque monuments in Britain and The Abbot’s Kitchen – an iconic building and a very rare survival in Europe of a medieval monastic kitchen.
