Glastonbury Abbey flies the flag
Glastonbury Abbey will be flying the Union Jack for the Jubilee and London 2012 - thanks to the Mid-Somerset branch of the Royal Air Forces Association.
RAFA has given the Abbey a flagpole and will use it to fly its standard during Battle of Britain Week in September and to mark Remembrance Day in November.
Nick Gaze, Abbey's facilities manager, said: "We were delighted to receive the flag pole and it's a great way of involving the Abbey in local community events as well as marking national, and international, occasions from time to time.
"What better year to have it installed than 2012 which will see so many celebrations across Glastonbury and Mid-Somerset. Our grateful thanks to Martyn Webb from the branch for organising it for us."
Paul Branson, branch chairman, said: "It is wonderful to have our standard flying in such beautiful surroundings. We hope it will raise awareness of our organisation and during Battle of Britain week we will be able to fly the RAF standard.
"It will continue to remind people of those who have given their lives for their country and still are doing. The standard that flies here also flies in Afghanistan today so this flagpole is linking our community with theirs."
