Big Garden Bird Watch 2019 and monitoring the abbey bird boxes

Big garden Bird Watch 2019

On Saturday 26th of January the RSPB held its national Big Garden Birdwatch event and the abbey once again took part, with our wildlife volunteers and members of staff joining with visitors to catalogue bird sightings within the grounds for the survey.

The weather was mostly fine - with the occasional shower of course - and feedback from visitors has been very positive. The results of the survey are:

  • Blackbird 20
  • Blue Tit 12
  • Chaffinch 7
  • Crow 10
  • Collared Dove 2
  • Great Tit 10
  • Gull 8
  • House Sparrow 60
  • Jackdaw 6
  • Robin 6
  • Song Thrush 1
  • Starling 6
  • Woodpecker 1
  • Woodpigeon 8
  • Wren 4

If you took part in the bird watch in your own garden remember you have until Sunday 17th of February to submit your results to the RSPB.

Bird Box Monitoring

On the morning of the 5th of February the wildlife volunteers met up with the grounds team to check the condition and usage of bird boxes around the Abbey. In total 20 boxes were found, cleaned and rehung, 6 had been used, mostly by blue/great tits around the wildlife area, with robins mostly using the boxes near the cafe.

The team found loads of different wood lice in the boxes at various stages of development and an impressive female walnut orb-weaver spider. Note the badger hair nest in the photo and the old blue tit's egg, also a few boxes damaged by woodpeckers and squirrels....

Thanks to Mark and Adam in grounds for the efforts, and Mark, Alison and Fran volunteers..
