Family Tour

Tuesday 31st July 2018

This year we are introducing tours aimed at families with children. The vocabulary used is easier for children to understand, and there are also coloured illustrations that show points of interest on the tour that are perhaps not so easily viewed from child height.
There is less emphasis on dates and more on visuals, in order to retain a child’s interest and help them remember what they’ve seen.
We hope that families will enjoy being able to take a tour with their children – and perhaps talk about the most memorable aspect on the way home.

*Normal Admission Applies

Medieval carpentry demonstration with The Medieval Makers

Friday 10th August 2018

Medieval carpentry demonstration with The Medieval Makers

Despite the depictions of woodworking artisans in woodcut and illuminated manuscripts of the time, not all medieval carpentry was carried out by axe wielding fellows in fine hosiery merrily hacking lumps out of huge timbers! In fact, medieval carpenters undertook a plethora of woodwork - ranging from production of agricultural tools to elaborate and ingenious joints for cathedral roofs.

Jeff Loader joins us once again to demonstrate the tools and techniques of the medieval artisan.

Attending an Outdoor Event at Glastonbury Abbey:

Glastonbury Abbey is an outdoor event space and as such is open to the vagaries of the British weather. Our advice when attending an event at Glastonbury Abbey is that you should dress appropriately for the weather conditions and also be prepared for changes as the event progresses. Events held in the evening can become cold and/or damp with dew. For predicted rain please bring suitable wet weather clothing (not umbrellas).

The abbey becomes very dark after sunset and has many fall and trip points. We do our best with temporary lighting to illuminate areas of safety concern and exits from the abbey. It is advised to bring a personal torch to aid your exit from the abbey after sunset.

For your comfort you may bring a camp chair or picnic blanket as seating is generally not provided. You may bring your well behaved dog* as long as it is kept on a lead and doesn’t disrupt the event.
Gazebo’s and other large structures are not allowed to be used within the grounds of Glastonbury Abbey.

All events will go on as planned in all weather conditions unless that weather becomes unsafe.

Glastonbury Abbey is a licensed venue. If you are intoxicated upon arrival you may be refused entry. No antisocial behaviour or disrespect toward the site, the ruins, other visitors or staff will be tolerated.

*Not including the Glastonbury Extravaganza which has its own terms and conditions of entry.

Old Herbaceous

Saturday 8th September 2018

Described as “Downton Abbey with gardening tips”, Old Herbaceous is the humorous love story of a single-minded yet gentle man with a passion for plants and is a charming one man play which has entranced sell-out audiences all around the country over the last two years.
An acute and sometimes hilarious observation of relationships between the classes in a simpler age, Old Herbaceous is sprinkled with witticisms and epithets. The evening blossoms into tender humour, much in the traditionally understated
English style of the early 20th century.
As Old Herbaceous, renowned actor Giles Shenton truly lives the part of the legendary Head Gardener, Herbert Pinnegar, inviting you to feel included in a private chat from a bygone, comforting age. Keeping you engrossed, amused and emotionally engaged from start to finish, Old Herbaceous will leave you with a feeling that, perhaps, all’s right with the world.
Start time 6pm with ‘doors open’ at 5pm.
£14 for adults and £10 for members.
Afternoon Tea available and picnics available - see ticket information
