Traces Revealed: Artwork in cloth, tile and clay inspired by the abbey

Saturday 30th September - Sunday 28th January 2018

This colourful exhibition features three Somerset women artists, all of whom have been inspired by different aspect of the abbey’s history and collections. Alicia Merrrett has produced vibrant quilted pictures representing artefacts and documents, while Kate Rattray has found fascination in relics and reliquaries for her richly patterned mosaics. Hiro Takahashi has used the abbey’s buildings and environment to inspire her delightful ceramics.
Come and discover which traces of the abbey will be revealed by these artists!

Big Bird Watch

The Big Garden Bird Watch will be taking place in the abbey grounds on Saturday 27th January at 10.30 until 11.30, with our Wildlife Volunteers. 

A warm drink (no charge) will be offered to participants in the Wildlife Hut.

The Rolling Cocktail Co presents Abbey House Warming - 1 delicious day, 1 stunning venue, 2 ginspired events of Afternoon Tea and a evening of gindulgence.

Afternoon Tea: A Gin & Prosecco cocktail (or mocktail if you are driving or under 18), a selection of freshly prepared finger sandwiches - cucumber, truffled egg mayonnaise, Gin cured smoked salmon with a citrus dressing, Coronation chicken, ham and mustard; scones with clotted cream featuring a gin and raspberry jam and strawberry preserve and a variety of homemade cakes plus your choice from a range of teas.

Gindulgence at Abbey House

Gindulgence is a gin festival featuring a selection of gin suppliers, samples, cocktails, nibbles and themed gifts and runs 6pm to 10pm.

The Gindulgence ticket includes a premium gin & tonic with a twist, a cotton tote bag, a branded glass, live music, samples from distinguished, local gin producers and entrance to Abbey House - please note it does not include entry to Glastonbury Abbey.

Reflections on Nature: Art inspired by the gardens and grounds

Saturday 24th March - Sunday 24th June 2018

An exhibition on the theme of the abbey in its natural setting by a group of local artists will display work in a range of media. Fine figural stone sculptures by Tom Clark will reflect the abbey’s own carvings, while paintings and prints by Lucy Willis, Ann Fagan and Andrea Clark will illustrate the trees, plants and wildlife which inhabit the abbey grounds. Delicate wood turning in organic shapes by Melvyn Firmager will complement exquisite botanical paintings by Marie Burke.

Digging Deeper talk and tour with Eric Cobb

Digging Deeper talk and tour with Eric Cobb. Based in Glastonbury , Eric is a retired history teacher and experienced lecturer with a master’s degree in medieval history. Already a qualified guide at Wells cathedral, he is delighted to offer focus tours at the abbey as a complement to those presented by the excellent Living History guides. His theme will be ‘Henry of Blois -Abbot, Prelate and Patron’ drawing on artefacts in the abbey museum to examine the role and career of this pivotal figure in the abbey’s history, extending the discussion outside at key points in the grounds

Carers

We are committed to making the abbey and events held at the abbey accessible to everyone. We may provide disabled ticket holders (who would be unable to attend without a PA - personal assistant / carer / essential companion) with a ticket at no additional cost for their PA, if they are in receipt of one of the following:

  • Middle or Higher rate DLA for care and/or mobility
  • Receipt of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Evidence of being severely sight impaired
  • CredAbility Access Card (+1 category requirement), see www.accesscard.org.uk
  • A recognised Assistance Dog ID Card

If you do not have any of the above evidence but are unable to attend the abbey without a PA you are welcome to post or email copies of any additional evidence that supports your application. Applications are judged on a case-by-case basis. Tickets for events are sold on a first come, first served basis.

If the event is organised by an external organisation, the above will not necessarily apply and you will need to liaise directly with the organisers. If you wish to contact the organisers please contact info@glastonburyabbey.com and we will put you in touch.
