Abbey Pond Project to go-ahead
Renovation work for a pond at Glastonbury Abbey has been made possible thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
The funding boost from Postcode Local Trust totalled £19,694 and means long awaited work can start.
It means the abbey can:-
reopen the pathway around the pond, allowing safe, close access
stop the deterioration of the east bank using sustainable methods
provide additional habitats to allow the pond’s inhabitants to thrive
perform essential bridge repairs at the same time to minimise disturbance to the pond.
Janet Bell, abbey director, said: “This £25,000 project has been made possible by the Postcode Local Trust and by other generous donations from the Alan Evans Memorial Trust and individuals, including an anonymous donor who spotted our Crowdfunding appeal and gave more than £3,000.
“We have just £700 to raise to hit our target and we are still welcoming donations. We are hopeful that this will be achieved.”
“The pond area is cherished and enjoyed by many of our visitors, particularly our 2000+ members who use the grounds regularly.
“We are working towards the first phase in a plan to provide safer access to water and nature at the abbey as well as improving its biodiversity and increasing learning and leisure opportunities for schools, families, the local community, and other visitors.
“We recognise the importance of pond maintenance and have taken specific expert advice in how to improve its health in a sustainable way.
“Regular visitors to the abbey may have noticed that the pathway around the edge of the wildlife (upper) pond has been closed for some time. This is due to erosion which is affecting the eastern bank and steadily worsening.”
The area will be fenced off from March 27 to April 13 while work takes place.
Postcode Local Trust exists to fund community groups and charitable organisations through a variety of grant giving programmes. To do so, the Trust relies solely on funding from the proceeds of tickets sales from People’s Postcode Lottery. When you sign up to play People’s Postcode Lottery, your postcode is your ticket. It costs £10 for 10 draws paid monthly in advance with prizes every day. A minimum of 27.5% goes directly to charities across Great Britain and internationally.
