Statement regarding Abbey House:

There appears to be misinformation and speculation circulating regarding Abbey House, which is both unhelpful and potentially inaccurate. The house has always been and will remain owned by Glastonbury Abbey. We would like to clarify that the house is being brought back into the direct management of the abbey estate and it is our intention to continue to welcome visitors into it in both the short and longer term future.

The house is an integral part of our development plans to improve the conservation, sustainability and wider visitor experience of the whole site. We also will use the opportunity to base some offices and administrative functions there to improve the working conditions for our staff.

We would like to emphasise that when our future plans are at appropriate level of detail we will be engaging in wider consultation with our stakeholders – we consider that it would not be helpful to do so beforehand and we are currently taking advice from statutory authorities and funding bodies.

We intend, as is already published on Abbey House’s website, to continue to enable groups to book the meeting rooms on a daily basis in the short term for activities that are appropriate to the abbey’s ethos, although there will be no residential accommodation.

Any organisation wishing to enquire about bookings for 2018 should contact the abbey directly on We will continue to work with all parties to ensure that the overall experience of Glastonbury for visitors is enhanced and is in keeping with the objectives of the abbey and the local community.
