Events season gets underway

Glastonbury Abbey’s busy events season kicks off with a fund-raising musical variety show on March 24 with the support of the town mayor.

Councillor Jon Cousins adopted the abbey’s appeal when he became mayor and is hosting two charity events at the Town Hall with all proceeds going to the Rescue our Ruins appeal – the Final Chapter.

The Final Chapter aims to raise £100,000 to cover the cost of the major conservation and enhancement of the Abbot’s Kitchen and the Lady Chapel, Crypt and Galilee.

The first fund-raising event of the year features a fantastic variety of musical performance from local favourites and other well-established and popular acts including Tim Hawthorn, Chloë Warren, Vela, The Avalonian Free State Choir, Oska Zaky and Craig and Alex Priddice.

Events manager James Stone said: “We are so grateful for the mayor’s support for our appeal and we are delighted he will be compere to this evening of rich variety and talent. A bar will also be available with a selection of local real ales and cider and we are sure it will be a great night.”

A Beetle Drive and Fish and Chip Supper is the second event, on 28 April. This promises to be an amusing evening of tension, laughter with attendees competing to be the first to shout “Beetle”; Knights of Glastonbury is providing a fish and chip supper too.

The Mayor said: “The abbey is very close to my heart and it is a place of international significance. I am delighted to support these two fund-raising events; I was so pleased that our quiz last year raised over £1200 for the abbey’s appeal.”

Both fundraising events will take place in Glastonbury Town Hall. Tickets priced at £7.50 for the Musical Variety Evening and £10 for the Beetle Drive including supper. Tickets are available from Glastonbury Abbey shop or online from the Glastonbury Abbey website,

The website also features the abbey’s packed events calendar with tickets on sale now for theatre shows, concerts and a banquet in the Abbot’s Kitchen.
