Practical Activities - UK Schools Only

Taking the Vow

Learn about becoming a monk and the life they led, including how many church services they would have to attend - even as novices. Then dress in a monk's robe and process in silence outside so a member of staff can take a photograph for the classroom wall.

Quills & Spills

Learn about writing manuscripts and illumination. Children then illuminate the initial letter of their first name whilst coming up one at a time to write their name with a quill and ink on a sheet of paper. This then goes back to school to commemorate their visit.

Medieval Health & Hygiene

The children learn about medieval dentistry (or lack of it) during this sensory activity. They learn why abbeys were important for the health of the population and make a salve for toothache which they can take away with them.

Pilgrim Badge Creation

The children learn why pilgrims thought it important to have a pilgrim's badge to take home with them after their visit. They then make a badge to take home with them to commemorate their visit. (Extra cost: 30p per badge)

Tales from King Arthur's Court

Book our storyteller for an interactive story session. This can be used as a springboard for your own literacy work in school.

Self - Guided Activities

Art Activities

Use St. Patrick's Chapel and the abbey ruins as part of your art project.

Grail Trail - As part of your day studying the Saxons your class are able to follow a trail to seek the Holy Grail. Many people have sought it - will your class be the ones who finally discover it!

Brother Bear's Nature Trails - Encourage your class to develop their awareness of the world around them. Brother Bear's cards gives picture clues for each child to find for a trail through the grounds of the abbey, using the fish pond, the duck pond and the wildlife walk, as well as the orchard and herb garden as stopping off points looking for clues about the time of year.

We offer a pictorial museum quiz so your class take a closer look at the artefacts in our collection. Children are able to work singly or in pairs on the activity, so they co-operate with each other. Please ask about our current quizzes.

Our Accredited museum has regular temporary exhibitions and time to look around these may also form part of your visit. Please ask about the current exhibition when you book.

Third Sector Education

Our costumed guides are also able to offer in depth tours to national and international university student groups, special interest groups and U3A groups. Please discuss your requirements with our Learning Manager.
