Mission Statement
At Glastonbury Abbey we believe we have a responsibility to care for and protect the environment in which we operate. We recognise that we have a duty to manage our grounds, buildings and collections sustainably, so that they are a valuable asset for future generations. We are therefore committed to sustainable development and the provision of a socially responsible and ethical service.
Guiding Principles
- To comply with, and exceed where practicable, all applicable legislation, regulations and codes of practice.
- To integrate sustainability considerations into all our activities and business decisions.
- To ensure that all staff are fully aware of our Sustainability Policy and are committed to implementing and improving it.
- To minimise the impact on sustainability of all office and grounds activities.
- To make visitors and our suppliers aware of our Sustainability Policy, and encourage them to adopt sound sustainable management practices.
- To review, annually report, and to continually strive to improve our sustainability performance.
The broad areas in which we aim to achieve sustainable development are environmental, economic and social.
We aim to:
- Minimise the impact of our activities on the environment
- Promote the long term economic future of our heritage site
- Serve the community by conserving our grounds, buildings and collections for posterity and enabling inclusive involvement in our activities
Objectives
Within the environmental, economic and social aspects of sustainable development, we will address the following key points:
- Planning: integrate sustainability into our long term policies and plans and regularly review our Environmental Policy Statement and Action Plan
- Monitoring: regularly audit our activities, set targets and measure progress
- Working practices: include sustainable principles in day-to-day operations
Legislation: meet and exceed relevant environmental laws wherever possible - Energy use: reduce consumption and promote energy and water conservation on site
- Raw materials: minimise pollution and waste and promote recycling
- Procurement: purchase sustainable and ethical products and materials wherever appropriate
- Transport: encourage sustainable practices among staff and visitors
- Conservation and preservation: maintain our grounds, buildings and collections for future generations
- Staff involvement: ensure all staff, trustees and volunteers are informed of sustainable policies, practices and procedures and are appropriately trained
- Communication: promote and publicise our sustainable practices and achievements
- Local community: encourage involvement, volunteering, partnerships, diversity and a wide range of opportunities for local people of all ages
