A diverse array of wildlife make their homes within the grounds of Glastonbury Abbey
A feature of the grounds of Glastonbury Abbey is the range of wildlife you can encounter throughout the seasons. Often you will see the evidence of badgers in the grounds as they roam looking for food overnight, disturbing the flower beds and grassed areas as they look for earthworms (consuming up to 200 per night!).
There are literally hundreds of different species of insects, birds, mammals, fish and plants on site, from the wildlife area on the western edge of the site to the ponds, the orchard and throughout the abbey precinct. The fishpond contains common carp and rudd among others and there are some very large fish to behold. The upper pond often attracts ducks and moorhen and is abuzz with insects throughout the seasons.
If you have the time to linger in each of the different areas of the site you will get to see an extraordinary array of wildlife and each visit promises something new.
