King Arthur Interactive Story Telling

Step back in time and discover the stories in the stones in this lively interactive session retelling the legend of King Arthur and its links to Glastonbury Abbey.

Meet an Anglo Saxon
Duration: 1 Hour
Capacity: 30 Pupils
Age Group: KS2
In this interactive session pupils will have the opportunity to find out what life was like for an Anglo Saxon. Pupils will look at simple primary source material and replica artefacts to compare life in Anglo-Saxon England with their own lives today.

Medieval Tooth Salve

Learn about Medieval Health & Hygiene whilst making a salve for toothache and discover some of the more ‘revolting’ aspects of medieval life.

- Tooth salve ingredients and their uses.
- Practical hands-on experience in making your own tooth salve.

Taking The Vow

In this fun and interactive session pupils get the opportunity to dress as a Benedictine Monk. They will learn about life in a medieval monastery and how it compares to their own lives today.

Abbot's Kitchen Revealed
Duration 1 Hour
Capacity: 30 Pupils
Age Group: KS1; KS2; KS3.
Delivered by a costumed presenter, children will explore the Abbot’s Kitchen and the abbey’s kitchen garden. They will learn about the foods cooked and consumed at the Abbey and the necessary roles required to deliver this. The session supports historical enquiry through active exploration and participation.

- To experience what food was like for medieval people.
- To observe the differences and similarities between food now and in medieval times.
- To work cooperatively as part of a small team.

Artefact Handling Session
Duration: 1 Hour
Capacity: 15 Pupils
Age Group: KS3; KS4.
We offer tailored object handling sessions based around themes such as the Anglo-Saxon and Medieval periods. Students will have the chance to get hands on with genuine artefacts from the abbey's collection to help them to explore their topic.
History Curriculum links
- The development of Church, state and society in Britain 600-1539.
- Understanding historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance, and using them to make connections, draw contrasts, analyse trends and frame historically-valid questions.
- Understanding how people's lives have shaped this nation and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world.
Character Interviews
Duration: 1 Hour
Capacity: 30 pupils
Age Range: KS4
Led by one of our costumed presenters you will have the opportunity to interview a specific character from the abbey's rich historical past whilst gaining knowledge and understanding of the impact the reformation of the monasteries had on their lifestyle, livelihood and wellbeing and their connection to the impact it had on church, state and society.
You will also get the opportunity to interview the presenter out of character and learn about their wider role within the organisation.
Abbot's Kitchen Case Study
Duration: 1 Hour
Capacity: 30 pupils
Age Group: KS4
Delivered by an experienced team member in the Abbot's Kitchen, students will explore the kitchen's history. Students will learn about the recent archaeological discoveries and how this has effected our interpretation of the building. The session includes a discussion on how use of the kitchen has changed post reformation and the challenges affecting the preservation of historic buildings.
The session supports historical enquiry through active exploration and participation.
