Nestled within the heart of Glastonbury and beautifully situated within 36 acres of parkland and gardens lies one of the most renowned abbeys of medieval England.
Glastonbury Abbey is famous for being one of the earliest centres of monasticism in England, surviving through to the Dissolution in 1539.
We are able to accommodate higher education groups from colleges and universities. Small groups of students can access our catalogue and stores, and specific items from the collection can be brought out for more detailed study.
We also offer tours and facilitated handling sessions based on a particular topic.
Group leaders can visit the museum for free in advance to plan the visit.
Learning Sessions
Guided Tours
Our guided tours offer a unique insight into the history and stories of the abbey. These can be tailored to suit the needs of your students and can be combined with object handling sessions to add another dimension to the visit.
Artefact Handling Sessions
We offer tailored object handling sessions based around themes such as the Anglo Saxon and Medieval periods. Students will have the chance to get hands on with objects from the collection to help them to explore their topic.
Archaeological Tour
Archaeology can give us tantalising glimpses into the past. On our archaeological tour we will explore and discuss some of the archaeological highlights of Glastonbury Abbey. This specialised archaeology tour will be taken by one of our most experienced Learning team members and will give you in depth information about the Abbey’s archaeology. If you have ever wondered what lies beneath the Abbey or what kinds of evidence we have for its past inhabitants' lives, then this is the tour for you.
